Andrea Luque
“Shaving”
Andrea Luque is from Barcelona and lives in Berlin. Her painting “Shaving,” an acrylic painting on cardboard, depicts a woman shaving her legs and is on view through the end of August as part of the current Woman Portrait Gallery group show. Viel Spaß!
Gregor: How did you get into painting?
Andrea: I studied philosophy in Barcelona, with a focus on applied philosophy, and then a master’s in cultural management. I’d been drawing since I was a child, in art classes. But I didn’t start painting seriously until after I moved to Berlin in 2022. At first, I worked in restaurants and gradually built a life for myself here. At the same time, I began following my passion for the arts.
Gregor: Why Berlin?
Andrea: I first got to know the city as a tourist. What I liked most was the cultural scene—the sheer number of events, the feeling that something new is constantly happening here. That energy continues to inspire me to this day and has shaped my work.
Gregor: What subjects do you paint most often?
Andrea: Everyday life. Intimate, ordinary moments—people engaged in seemingly mundane activities. Women are often at the centre of my work. It’s important to me to depict situations that women can relate to and that make us smile.
Gregor: Was this direction clear from the start?
Andrea: No, it developed quite organically. It wasn’t until I looked back that I realised certain motifs kept returning.
Gregor: How do you paint?
Andrea: Mostly with acrylics, at home. My paintings are very colourful—perhaps a contrast to grey Berlin. The process often begins with a concept, but as soon as I start painting, everything becomes intuitive. It’s like an interplay between plan and spontaneous decisions. I want my paintings to bring joy and be easily accessible. Humour is important to me.
Gregor: You’re not only a painter but also a curator. How do those two roles fit together?
Andrea: I’m just as interested in planning and developing cultural projects as I am in painting. Organising helps me stay motivated in the long run; it’s a balance to my painting. And collaborating with other artists is a great learning experience.
Gregor: What are your goals?
Andrea: To open my own art space, a gallery—not just for exhibitions, but for a full cultural program. Combining painting, exhibitions, and events is one of my greatest passions. I hope that I can continue to combine and develop both of these aspects in the future.
